Provost Names Rankin to Vice Provost for Research and Economic Development Post
James M. Rankin
Provost Sharon Gaber is pleased to announce that James M. Rankin has accepted the position of vice provost for research and economic development at the University of Arkansas, effective July 19. Rankin currently serves as associate dean for research, graduate studies and planning in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology and as professor of electrical engineering at Ohio University. Previously, he served as interim vice president for research at Ohio University and director of the Avionics Engineering Center.
Rankin brings with him a strong background in research and economic development including experience in licensing and technology transfer. The decision to hire Rankin was made following a rigorous, nationwide search process in which three candidates engaged in interviews and meetings with internal and external stakeholders to the university — including faculty, staff and students — as well as with state economic development and research leaders.
Rankin holds a doctoral degree in electrical engineering from Iowa State University, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University, and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.
“Jim Rankin has the knowledge and experience to provide strong leadership for the University of Arkansas’ research and economic development efforts. We are confident that he will continue the positive trajectory of upward momentum in external research funding and new company start-ups,” Provost Gaber said.
Chancellor Gearhart added, “Jim Rankin’s breadth of experience in research administration, technology transfer, patents and licensing, export control compliance and economic development make him uniquely qualified to step into this position and hit the ground running.”
As the vice provost for research and economic development, Rankin will report to the provost and will work with the University of Arkansas Technology Development Foundation and the Arkansas Research Technology Park. He will oversee the Technology Licensing Office, the Office of Research Support and Sponsored Programs, Research Compliance, and the University of Arkansas Press. He will work directly with faculty, deans and state economic development officials.
