FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani will speak at the University of Arkansas at 8 p.m. Sunday, April 3, in Barnhill Arena as part of the student-sponsored Distinguished Lecture Series. The event is free and open to the public. No ticket is required.

Giuliani rose to national prominence in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, attack on the World Trade Center in New York City. He was widely praised for his leadership in the weeks after the bombing and was a visible presence in the national media, expressing the emotions and determination of the people of New York. He was hailed as “America’s Mayor” by Oprah Winfrey, a label that was adopted by many in the media. He was named Time magazine’s “Person of the Year” for 2001.

“This year is the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, and the members of the Distinguished Lecture Series committee wanted to recognize the key event of our generation,” said Tammy Lipert, co-chair of the committee. “We were very pleased that Mayor Giuliani accepted our invitation to speak.”

Giuliani served as mayor of New York from 1994 to 2001. He has since been a candidate for the U.S. Senate in New York and for the Republican presidential nomination. He is considered a potential candidate to run for president again in 2012.

Giuliani will speak on “Principled Leadership: In the Face of Change and Crisis.”

The Distinguished Lecture Series at the University of Arkansas is a student-sponsored event. The speaker is chosen by a student committee, and the event is funded by a student-approved fee. Past speakers have included Anderson Cooper, Magic Johnson and former President George H.W. Bush.
