University of Arkansas Looking to Expand National Fraternity Chapters on Campus

The University of Arkansas Interfraternity Council is seeking more fraternity chapters for campus. The council, comprising 12 national fraternities, hopes to extend an invitation to two new fraternities this spring. Four national organizations will be on campus this spring to make formal presentations.

“Our numbers continue to grow each year, and we believe it is time for us to expand to provide additional opportunities for students to be a part of our Greek community. We are excited about expansion!” said Mark Machen, president of the university's Interfraternity Council.

The decision to add new fraternities was initially passed in fall 2011 in response to the increased number of men wanting to join a fraternity.

In December the University of Arkansas announced to all National Interfraternity Conference organizations that the U of A wished to expand. The university received seven applications from interested fraternities. The Interfraternity Council Expansion Committee, made of undergraduate and alumni representatives from existing fraternities, formed to review materials. This group will make a recommendation to the full council in April.

“Several national organizations will be on campus to share what their organization has to offer,” said Parice S. Bowser, director of Greek Life. “The university community is encouraged to attend the presentations and provide feedback during this selection process.”

Four National Interfraternity Conference fraternities will come to campus to make formal presentations about their respective organizations to the community. The formal presentations will begin at 6 p.m. ion the Donald W. Reynolds Center Auditorium:

• March 27, Alpha Tau Omega
• March 28, Pi Kappa Phi
• March 29, Kappa Alpha Order
• April 3, Beta Theta Pi

Events are open to any member of the campus and surrounding community including students, alumni, faculty and others interested in learning more about these organizations.
