Cancer Treatment Researcher Joins Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences has announced that Wei Shi will join the department of chemistry and biochemistry this fall as an assistant professor. Shi’s research interests include the behavior of cancer cells while undergoing treatment with antitumor agents and their functionalized probes.

“Dr. Shi is conducting significant research on the science behind cancer treatment,” said Robert Gawley, distinguished professor of chemistry and chair of the department. “He has an impressive publishing record and is an experienced teacher and mentor. We’re excited to have him on board.”

Shi has produced more than a dozen articles for peer-reviewed journals and has presented his research at conferences and poster competitions in the United States and Canada.

“I have lived in many places, but none quite like Fayetteville,” said Shi. “I look forward to being at the University of Arkansas and contributing to the work being done in the department.”

Shi has received numerous honors for his research and academic achievements. While studying at the University of Alberta, he was awarded the Alberta Ingenuity Student Scholarship, the Marie Arnold Cancer Research Graduate Scholarship, the Mary Louise Imrie Graduate Student award and the Bio-Méga Boehringer–Ingelheim Prize.

Shi comes to Fayetteville from Johns Hopkins University where he has conducted postdoctoral research in organic and medicinal chemistry since 2008. He holds a bachelor of science in chemistry from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China (1993) and a master of science in organic chemistry from the East China University of Science and Technology in Shanghai (2000). He earned a doctorate in organic/medical chemistry from the University of Alberta in Edmonton (2008).
