Student Wounded Accidentally by Gunshot
A work-study student employed at KUAF radio station accidentally wounded his hand a little after 12:30 p.m. today when a handgun he had removed from his day pack discharged. The student was near the station's breakroom, and no one else at the station was injured.
University of Arkansas Police received a call about the shooting at 12:36 and responded to the scene by 12:42. Fayetteville police and first responders also responded to the incident. The student was transported to Washington Regional Medical Center with wounds to his hand that were described as non-life-threatening.
The pistol was described by police as one designed to fire .410-gauge shotgun shells or .45-caliber Long Colt bullets.
The KUAF studios, which are owned by the university, are not part of the main campus but rather are at the northwest corner of Mountain Street and School Avenue, closer to downtown Fayetteville. Firearms are prohibited from being carried on properties of the university, including KUAF.
