Research Contract Funds Technology Transfer Project for Superconducting Electronics
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ajay Malshe, Distinguished Professor of Engineering in the mechanical engineering department at the University of Arkansas, has received a contract from the Office of Naval Research to move into the next phase of developing industrial applications for ultra-low temperature superconducting electronics to use in high-speed communication.
Malshe and his research team of doctoral and post-doctoral students in the College of Engineering have received funding from the Office of Naval Research over the past five years, to develop the advanced engineering needed to package the superconducting electronics.
The office is now providing a multi-year Small Business Technology Transfer Phase-II contract for Malshe and his team to design, engineer and test a method to transfer this technology so it can be used in industrial manufacturing.
Ultralow temperature electronics is useful in many areas, such as space exploration, high-speed communication and cloud computing. The patent-pending technology being developed under this contract is critical for the successful use of ultra-low temperature superconducting electronics in these areas.
Malshe has worked extensively in electronics packaging, nano manufacturing, and advanced materials and manufacturing. He and his associates have received numerous awards for research, development and technology transfer, including the Edison Award, R&D 100 Award and Tibbett Award in 2013-14. Malshe is a fellow of four international societies in materials, physics, manufacturing and mechanical engineering.
