High-Style, Low-Cost Housing Modules Arrive Tuesday
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark - University of Arkansas architecture professor Gregory Herman and his students have spent the summer drafting, rethinking and refining designs for a 1,000-square-foot, affordable modular home that they're building in partnership with Taylor Built Homes. After countless faxes, many hours in the workshop, and some 15 trips to Taylor Built's Anderson, Missouri factory, they're about to get really busy. The two modules, which weigh in at approximately 36,000 pounds a piece, will arrive at the Fayetteville site tomorrow.
WHO: Greg Herman and his students and Taylor Built President Hal Roberts and Vice President Bob Patchett will be there to answer questions.
WHAT: two modules will travel 54 miles on flatbed trucks from the Anderson, Missouri factory to Fayetteville, arriving at the Fayetteville site by Tuesday morning, August 5.
WHEN: Crews will slide modules into place on the foundation around noon Tuesday, while students document the process. Sandwiches and drinks will be available courtesy of Taylor Built Homes.
WHERE: the house site is located in southeast Fayetteville at the southwest corner of S. Washington and 12th streets.

The students will spend the next few weeks painting the interior and exterior of the house and installing porches, siding, roof and flooring. The house will be finished with custom elements such as curly maple and cherry light fixtures, solid butcher block kitchen counter tops, operable shutters, and shelving hand-crafted by students. They expect to complete work on the house in late August. The City of Fayetteville will identify eligible buyers, who must meet HUD guidelines for low to moderate income to purchase this home.
