Journalism Days Events Set

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Hank Klibanoff, managing editor of news for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is the featured speaker at this year’s J-Days celebration, hosted by the Walter J. Lemke Department of Journalism at the University of Arkansas April 3-7.

Klibanoff, co-author of "The Race Beat: The Press, the Civil Rights Struggle and the Awakening of a Nation," will deliver the 2006 Roy Reed Lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, in the Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House at Razorback Road and Maple Street. The lecture is free and open to the public.

In addition to Klibanoff’s lecture and visits by Lemke alumni and other professional journalists, Journalism Days will feature a scholarship banquet and Lemke Society silent auction on the evening of Thursday, April 6, and the Lemke Alumni Society Golf Classic beginning at noon on Friday, April 7, at Stonebridge Meadows in southeast Fayetteville. The week’s events begin Monday, April 3, with a presentation by Michael Dean, author and documentary film maker. Dean will visit with broadcast students at 10:30 a.m. in Kimpel Hall 111. That evening at 6, Dean will speak in Kimpel 102 about the rules of the typical distribution model and how he broke them.

At 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, RaeGina Covington, a journalism graduate student, will show her photographs in Kimpel 209and talk about her photo thesis project, documenting her search for her ancestors in the Arkansas Delta.

At 6 p.m. Tuesday, Ernie Oakleaf will discuss his political polling/survey company, Oakleafs, in Kimpel 113.

At 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, a panel of TV news reporters and anchors will discuss the world of television news in Kimpel 111.

Ryan McKee of Robert Hall International, a Lemke graduate, will talk with students about resumes and interviewing at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, April 6, in Kimpel 115. He will talk to another class at 12:30 p.m.

McKee’s talks are among several events scheduled for Thursday. Don Nelms and Carla Tyson will discuss photography with students at 9:30 a.m. in Kimpel 111. At 11 a.m. Andy Shupe, photo editor for the Northwest Arkansas Times, will show his photographs and discuss photojournalism in Kimpel 102.

Also on Thursday an awards ceremony for the completion of the fifth annual Lemke Journalism Project will begin at 3 p.m. The Lemke Journalism Project brings in high school students from the area who want to learn to write in journalistic style and publish a newspaper about multicultural issues in northwest Arkansas.

Nineteen students from Rogers, Springdale, Fayetteville and Berryville will be honored during the ceremony in Kimpel Hall 111 with the presentation of the published newspaper and awards. Television and radio work completed by the students will also be featured.

At 9 a.m. Friday, April 7, a panel of TV news directors will talk to students in Kimpel 111about what new college graduates need, want and ought to know.

Journalism Days is an annual event organized and sponsored by the Walter J. Lemke Department of Journalism.
