NATIONAL EXPERT ON RESEARCH IN HUMAN SEXUALITY TO SPEAK AT UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Michael Wiederman, a leading researcher nationally in the field of human sexuality, will present a series of lectures and seminars at the University of Arkansas on September 26 and 27.

Sponsored by the College of Education and Health Professions and the department of health science, kinesiology, recreation and dance, the presentations to faculty and graduate students will address issues in research in human sexuality. Wiederman will also offer students insights on preparing for graduate studies.

"Dr. Wiederman is one of the best young researchers in the business," said Michael Young, professor of health science. "His seminars will be particularly valuable for our graduate students because of his expertise with appropriate research design methodology in studying human sexuality."

Wiederman, associate professor of psychology at Columbia College, is author of Understanding Sexuality Research, which is frequently used in both graduate and undergraduate human sexuality courses. He is also senior editor and author of several chapters of a new text, Handbook for Conducting Research on Human Sexuality.

Since receiving his doctoral degree in 1994, Wiederman has published over 85 research articles in scholarly journals. He is co-author of The Complete Guide to Graduate School Admissions: Psychology, Counseling, and Related Professions.

While on campus, Wiederman will speak formally and informally with faculty and students involved with research in human sexuality. Scheduled programs are

• Understanding Research: Examples from Research in Human Sexuality: On Thursday, September 26, Wiederman will present a seminar for faculty and students hosted by graduate students in the department of health science, kinesiology, recreation and dance. He will share results of his research in human sexuality and discuss issues that are generally applicable to research in behavioral and social sciences from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in HPER room 311.
• Also on Thursday evening, graduate students studying Research Issues in Human Sexuality will host a dinner with Wiederman to discuss methodological issues that are especially relevant for researchers in human sexuality. • Questions and Discussions with Michael Wiederman: On Friday, September 27, health science students have organized an informal session from 10:30 a.m. to noon in HPER room 204 for students to address topics of their choice, from specific questions regarding sexuality research, to the importance of research and publication, to getting into graduate school. UA students, especially those in health science, psychology, counseling, and human development, are invited to attend. Faculty are welcome.
• Data-Driven Myths About Human Sexuality (Or Sexual Misperceptions Based On Misinterpretation Of Research Data): On Friday, September 27, the College of Education and Health Professions will sponsor a talk by Wiederman from 3:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. in the Graduate Education Building Auditorium. This presentation is open to the general public as well as the university community.
