OFFICIAL UNIVERSITY RINGS BESTOWED

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — For the first time in the University’s history, a number of 2002 graduates will receive Official University Rings at a ceremony to be held today at 4:30 p.m. at the Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House. In February, Chancellor John A. White, Arkansas Alumni Association Executive Director Mike Macechko, and Razorback Athletic Director Frank Broyles unveiled The University of Arkansas’ Official Ring. The Ring was developed as the one and only ring that symbolizes not only the goals achieved by UA graduates, but also the tradition of fostering loyalty, pride and recognition of the University of Arkansas. Chancellor John A. White will present the Official Rings to students who placed their orders during Grad Salute last month. This first-of-its-kind ceremony promises to be a lasting tradition that ties graduates to the University similar to Senior Walk. This new tradition is available to University of Arkansas students who have achieved verified senior status. In future years, seniors who purchase the rings will receive them at an Official Ring ceremony to be held in the fall of their senior year. Until the day of graduation, the ring will be worn on the right hand with Old Main facing the individual. At graduation the new alumni will be prompted to reposition the ring, similar to the tradition of changing the side of the tassel on the mortarboard. For the rest of their lives, these graduates will remember this very special occasion. The ring, with its shining beacon of hope, will enable the wearer to recognize fellow graduates, and be recognized at a glance.
