PRESIDENT CLINTON TO DEDICATE FULBRIGHT SCULPTURE AT UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS

Fayetteville, Ark.  — President William Jefferson Clinton will be the main speaker at a ceremony dedicating the 7-foot sculpture of former University of Arkansas president and U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright. The dedication will be part of a celebration honoring the 50th anniversary of the German-American Fulbright Educational Exchange Program.

The dedication ceremony, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday, October 21, will be held in the walkway between Old Main and Vol Walker Hall on the University of Arkansas campus. Other dignitaries scheduled to speak include President Johannes Rau of Germany, UA Chancellor John White, poet Miller Williams, Fulbright College Interim Dean Donald Bobbitt, Harriet Fulbright, and John McCloy and Bettina Adenauer, descendants of the original signers who established the Fulbright program in Germany. The bronze sculpture of Fulbright was created by artist Gretta Bader.

The celebration is being sponsored by the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences and the University of Arkansas, in conjunction with the UA European Studies Program, the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies at Johns Hopkins University, the German-American Fulbright Commission, and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Symposium on "German and American Relationships in Business and Economics." Continuing Education Auditorium, 2 East Center Street, Room 204. Panelists will include

. Jack Janes, moderator, Executive Director of the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies at Johns Hopkins University

. Rüdiger Löwe, journalist with the ARD Network in Germany

. Wolfgang Ischinger, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United States of America

. Dr. Bettina Adenauer, attorney, businesswoman, and granddaughter of Konrad Adenauer, former Chancellor of the West German Republic

. Dr. Helga Haftendorn, German Fulbright scholar at the University of Arkansas in 1955-56, Professor Emeritus of international relations at the Free University of Berlin, director of the Center on Transatlantic Foreign and Security Policy Studies

. John McCloy, American businessman and descendant of one of original signers of agreement establishing the German-American Fulbright Program

. General Wesley Clark,, native of Little Rock, former Supreme Allied Commander of Europe and military analyst for CNN

. Dr. William Bader, former Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs

. Hoyt Purvis, director of the International Relations Program at the University of Arkansas and former chair of Fulbright Scholarship Board

. Dr. Steven Mueller, former president of Johns Hopkins University

. Dr. Werner Meissner, former President of the University of Frankfurt

1:30-2:45 p.m. Dedication of Fulbright Sculpture

2:45 - 4:30. Reception in the Student Union Ballroom. Open to the public.

NOTE: President Rau has been invited but has not yet formally accepted. The list of speakers may change, and so a release will be issued the week prior to the event. A riser for the media will be located near the speakers’ platform, and media are invited to attend both the symposium and the dedication. A press conference will be scheduled as well.
