Results From the Razorback Technology Challenge Competition

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Close to 350 students from middle schools, junior high schools and high schools in Arkansas and Oklahoma arrived at the University of Arkansas campus on Dead Day last week to compete in events that showcased their technological skills and problem-solving abilities.

Students built and raced dragsters, built and tested bridges, and competed in the Technology Quiz Bowl. The students also participated in the Problem Solving Challenge in which teams built a device to drive a Wiffel ball the farthest distance.

Level one overall competition winners are Stilwell Junior High, first place; Roland Junior High, second place; Tahlequah Junior High, third place. Overall level two competition winners were Roland High School, first place; Heavener High School, second place; Stilwell High School, third place.

Level one Dragster Challenge winners are Joshua Essay of Stilwell, Okla., first place; Jessica Montgomery of Darby Junior High, second place; and Daisy Garcia of Darby Junior High, third place. Level two winners are Nicholas Bogart of Stilwell, Okla., first place; Will Matthews of Stilwell, Okla., second place; and Josh Black of Stilwell, Okla., third place.

Level one Technology Quiz Bowl winners are Tahlequah, Okla., first place; Kimmons Junior High, of Fort Smith, second place; and Roland Junior High, third place. Level two winners are Heavener ‘B’ team, first place; Heavener ‘A’ team, second place; and Panama, Okla., third place.

Level one Graphic Design winners are Bethany Tindle of Puterbaugh Middle School in McAlister, Okla., first place; Colton James of McAlister, Okla., second place; and Dalton Gilbert of Roland Junior High, third place. Level two winners are Jade Edwards of Roland High School, first place; Macey Casher of Roland High School, second place; and Brad Andrews of Roland High School, third place.

Level one Structural Challenge winners are William Hutson of Spiro, Okla., first place; Jordan Richards of Roland Junior High, second place; and Aubrey Hale of Roland Junior High, third place. Level two winners are Brad Andrews of Roland High School, first place; Chris Leflore of Heavner, Okla., second place; and Christian Lyall of Spiro, Okla., third place.

Level one Problem Solving Challenge winners are Taylor Hawley, Paul Rumler and Joshua Essay of Stilwell, Okla., first place; Tim England, Hunter Fishinghook and Drew Kimble of Stilwell, Okla., second place; and Dalton Williams, Ryan Tousand and Luis Vasquez of Ramay Junior High, third place. Level two winners are Brad Andrews, Jade Edwards and Rachel Will of Roland High School, first place; Chastity Morris, Stormy Winters and Rickie White of Heavener, Okla., second place; and Daniel Best, Blake Smiths and Jessica Dorant of Panama, Okla., third place.

Bryan Hill, director of student recruitment for the College of Engineering, coordinated the event with Vinson Carter, visiting instructor in technology education for the College of Education and Health Professions. Hill led a team of engineering student ambassadors who worked with university representatives from across campus to make the event a great success.

The competition and events were modeled on those sanctioned by the Technology Student Association, a 150,000-member national organization based in Reston, Va., whose goal is to promote technological literacy and leadership.
