Statement Regarding Appeal in Richardson Case

The University of Arkansas learned today that former Razorback head basketball coach Nolan Richardson, Jr., has filed notice of appeal of the judgment rendered by United States District Judge William R. Wilson, Jr., dismissing Mr. Richardson's lawsuit against the University of Arkansas and other defendants. The University refers all questions to Philip E. Kaplan, its lead trial counsel, who issued the following statement:

"I regret that Mr. Richardson has seen fit to prolong this litigation. We believe that Judge Wilson's decision dismissing all of Mr. Richardson's claims is amply supported by the evidence and applicable law and will withstand scrutiny on appeal. The University will now review a cross appeal on the issue of whether Mr. Richardson has made reasonable efforts to seek other employment to reduce amounts otherwise required to be paid him under his employment agreement. While this case continues, the University is moving ahead with its mission of building a diverse, welcoming and student-centered institution. The University intends to have no further comment during the pendency of the appeal and we have also advised the individual defendants to refrain from speaking publicly concerning the case."
