UA HONORS ROGERS CHEMISTRY TEACHER AND UA ALUM NAMED HIGH SCHOOL CHEMISTRY TEACHING AWARD WINNER FOR 1999
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Steven Long, a teacher at Rogers High School, is being honored with a reception at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the University of Arkansas at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 1.
Long recently was recognized with the High School Chemistry Teaching Award from the Southwest Region of the American Chemical Society. Presenting this award to Long at 11 a.m. on Saturday will be Representative Asa Hutchinson and Chancellor John White.
Long was nominated for this award by the University of Arkansas section of the American Chemical Society. He competed against other nominees from the Southwest Region of the American Chemical Society which includes Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. The award carries with it a $1000 prize for Mr. Long as well as a $500 check to Rogers High School.
Long has received much notice in the past for his classroom performance. He also plays an active role in shaping chemistry and science teaching regionally and nationally. He has, for example, been called upon frequently to serve on committees that set testing standards for students and, as recently as last week, was in Washington D.C. to testify on science teaching.
He also recently spent a summer conducting biochemical research at the University of Arkansas.
Long is an alumnus of the University of Arkansas. He began his teaching career in the Dallas, Texas area before returning to Northwest Arkansas.
A nonprofit organization with a membership of nearly 159,000 chemists and chemical engineers, the American Chemical Society publishes scientific journals and databases, convenes major research conferences, and provides educational, science policy and career programs in chemistry. Its main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.
A brief tour of the research laboratories of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry will be given to Representative Hutchinson at 10:30 and members of the media are invited to join this tour.
