UA Law Professors Win National Award For Food Safety Book

UA law professors Jake Looney and John D. Copeland were recognized by the American Agricultural Law Association as recipients of its "Special Award for Excellence in Scholarship 2000" for the book FOOD SAFETY - STATE AND FEDERAL STANDARDS AND REGULATIONS (1999).

The American Agricultural Law Association (AALA) is a national professional organization that focuses on the legal needs of the agricultural community. Its membership consists of agricultural lawyers, teachers and other professionals.

The project was made possible by a grant from the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) Research Foundation to the University of Arkansas through its School of Law. Funds for the grant were made available from the United States Food and Drug Administration.

The project was administered by the National Center for Agricultural Law Research and Information (NCALRI). The NCALRI is an off-site information center of the National Agricultural Library and is located at the UA School of Law.

"The law school is extremely pleased that a publication produced by our Agricultural Law Research Center has achieved this national recognition for it's scholarly excellence," said Robert Moberly, UA School of Law dean.

The publication consists of a series of resource documents. One was created for each state and the federal government, describing the manner in which food is regulated, what areas overlap, what areas lack regulation and the amount of resources expended to regulate food. Topics include food labeling, advertising, restaurants, grocery stores, medicated animal feed, irradiation, food sanitation, transportation, canneries, warehouses, grain elevators and infant formula along with others. The federal section tracks the authority of federal agencies including FDA, USDA, EPA, FTC, DOT, DOC and other agencies within the various departments and what their relationships are with state and federal agencies.

The law school recognizes the following individuals who also contributed to the creation of the publication: Janie Hipp, Amy White, Brett Offutt, Diane L. Thue-Vasques, M. Gayle Packer, Monica Armster, David Tyler, Anita Poole and Dr. Fred Fox.
