UA SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE FEATURED IN LEADING JOURNALS

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The leading American architecture journal, Architectural Record, unveils a new generation of architects at the University of Arkansas this month: a design-build project overseen by professors Greg Herman and Eva Kultermann and funded by the Bank of Fayetteville's Community Development Corporation.

The studio, comprised of 16 fourth- and fifth-year architecture students, was created by Eva Kultermann in 1999 with a desire "to avoid the abstraction of conventional studio conditions" in favor of what she calls "an applied experience."

By building, she believes architecture students ideally may learn the fundamentals of design practicalities and limitations of building on a budget.

The article, which appears in the September 2002 edition, chronicles the building of the two-story house located on Mashburn Avenue in Fayetteville over the course of one semester.

"As an instructor I'm extremely proud of the work done by the students. Their intensive collaborative work has succeeded both as a design exercise and as service to the community," said professor Greg Herman. "We hope to be able to complete such projects in the future as Fayetteville and the surrounding areas continue to urbanize."

The Chronicle of Higher Education also featured University of Arkansas architecture student Vuong Dang last month in "Surveying History, One Bridge at a Time."

This story highlights Dang's summer spent with other architecture and engineering students creating architectural drawings of historic bridges. These drawings will eventually become part of the National Park Service's Historic American Engineering Record.
