UA STATEWIDE MASS SPECTROMETRY FACILITY TO HOST WORKSHOP AND OPEN HOUSE
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Statewide Mass Spectrometry Facility (Mass Spec Facility) will host a free proteomics workshop/seminar, "Applications in Proteomics for Mass Spectrometry Featuring: New Tools & Strategies for Accelerating Research and Discovery," by Thermo Electron, July 22 beginning at 8:15 a.m. in the Center for Excellence for Poultry Science on the U of A campus.
"Proteomics is at the forefront of emerging new sciences and blends traditional disciplines into new tools to help answer questions in the agricultural, biological and medical-sciences." Facility Director Jack Lay said.
"Typically proteomics is the application of analytical approaches, such as mass spectrometry, to the unraveling of complex biology-based questions."
This seminar will appeal to those interested in the development of new tools based on chemistry, biology and biochemistry to solve important problems in both the basic and applied sciences.
Thermo Electron is one of the world's largest manufacturers of proteomics equipment. The seminar series will highlight a variety of approaches to proteomics. Topics include:

Using Mass Spectrometry to Explore the Pathophysiology of Migraine, by Dr. Michael Harrington, Huntington Medical Research Institute
Livestock Proteomics, by Dr. Shane Burgess, Mississippi State University
New Applications on a Hybrid MALDI-MS/MS by Amy Zumwalt, Thermo Electron

The portion of the Mass Spec Facility located in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry recently moved to Poultry Science, POSC L-105/L-109, while the Chemistry Building is being renovated.
In conjunction with the workshop, the Mass Spec Facility will host an open house in the new location from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for which no registration is required.
The Mass Spec Facility is a state-of-the-art mass spectrometry resource that provides sophisticated mass spectrometry support for academic, government and industrial researchers within Arkansas and the nation.
