University of Arkansas Community Exceeds United Way Goal and Sets Record for Contributions

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — As of December 7, the University of Arkansas has raised more than $170,000 for the United Way of Northwest Arkansas during its campus-wide campaign for 2007, surpassing the university’s goal of $145,000 by more than $25,000.

This is the largest amount ever raised by the University of Arkansas for the United Way. Bob McMath, dean of the Honors College, and Judy Schwab, assistant vice chancellor for University Advancement, serve as co-chairs for the United Way campaign.

“The success of this year’s campaign speaks volumes about the university’s commitment to northwest Arkansas and the spirit of philanthropy that inspires individuals across campus to respond to the needs of those who are in medical, financial or economic distress,” Chancellor John A. White said. “I am very proud of the generous spirit of giving of the students, faculty and staff during this year’s United Way campaign.”

More than 100 faculty and staff volunteers from all colleges and departments of the university have contributed to the success of this year’s United Way campaign, with 1,155 faculty and staff making financial commitments to the 2007 effort. In addition, University of Arkansas students pitched in to raise over $3,000 from seven different events, including a Casino Night, Penny Wars, Domino’s Pizza promotion, and sale of United Way coffee mugs. The amount raised this year by students easily exceeded last year’s total.

 “Student participation provided an extra spark to the campaign this year,” McMath said.  “They not only raised money, but they also raised awareness of how student donations enable United Way agencies to provide essential services to people in need in northwest Arkansas. I particularly appreciate the efforts of the Associated Student Government, the Division of Student Affairs, and Registered Student Organization leaders in making this happen.”

Earlene Baker, who has long served as the university’s liaison with the United Way, said that the level of participation from the staff of the department of facilities management was a highlight of the campaign.

“Their generosity was simply amazing, setting new records in terms of dollars raised and the number of employees participating. Since they are the largest department on campus, we rely on their support and giving during this campaign. They also held a pie-throwing contest and a Jean’s Day which raised additional funds.”

Among the 78 agencies that benefit annually from the United Way are the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Arkansas, Community Clinic at St. Francis House, Headstart, Life Styles Inc., the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter and the Peace at Home Family Shelter.

The University of Arkansas will host a victory celebration at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008, to celebrate the success of this year’s campaign. All who participated are invited to attend the event at the University House, 1002 W. Maple St.

Additional contributions can be sent to Earlene Baker, assistant vice chancellor for Finance and Administration, at 406 ADMN on the University of Arkansas campus. Contributions will be accepted through Feb. 1.
