University of Arkansas Press to Hold Big Warehouse Sale

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The University of Arkansas Press will have a huge book sale Nov. 9 and 10, at its warehouse at 1580 West Mitchell St. Hundreds of books in new condition will be priced as low as $1 for paperbacks and only $2 for hardbacks for the two days, said Tom Lavoie, marketing director for the press.

The sale is being held to reduce the inventory of books that have more stock than is likely to sell over the next 10 years. Lavoie said: “We keep careful records on the rate of sale for all of our 600 plus titles, projecting each book’s sale over a 10-year period. If we have more books in stock than we can sell in that time, we reduce prices to move some inventory,” Lavoie said.

Many of the overstock books are remaining from the days when publishers did not have the option of “print on demand” (POD) publishing as they do now. Publishers had to estimate print quantities knowing that reprints would be very expensive. “We had to try to print enough books to insure we wouldn’t sell out of a title while still trying not to overprint and have excess inventory,” Lavoie said. “These days, with economical short print runs, we can print more conservatively and not run the risk of having more than we can sell. With the new technology, our goal is to have no overstocks in the future.”

The publication dates for the books to be on sale range from the 1980s to 2004 and include nature, history, art, poetry, biography and many other topics. “This is a great opportunity to do some early Christmas shopping,” Lavoie said.

Hours will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9 and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 10 at the University of Arkansas Press warehouse on Mitchell Street off Razorback Road. There will be free parking for both days. Visa, Mastercard, checks and cash will be accepted, and quantities are limited.
