FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The University of Arkansas celebrated another year of claiming some of the highest state and national scholarships in the 2001-2002 academic year for a fourth year in row.

More than 86 students staked claim on some of the state and nation's most prestigious scholarships and awards, totaling more than $780,900 and finishing higher than some of the country's most elite higher education institutions.

"For a fourth straight year, the University of Arkansas has excelled among the most elite universities in the country. Our students, staff, and faculty are to be commended for another unprecedented accomplishment," said UA Chancellor John A. White. "The University of Arkansas continues to work toward emerging as a nationally competitive, student-centered research university serving Arkansas and the world. It's a vision that comes closer to realization with each passing year, thanks to an enormously talented faculty and bright, hardworking students."

According to Suzanne McCray, director of Office of Post-Graduate Fellowships, the University of Arkansas' student accomplishments for 2001-2002 is the result of a campus-wide effort and hard working students.

"This university, from Chancellor White and Provost Smith to the college deans to individual faculty members, energetically supports scholarship efforts," McCray said. "Because so many of the departments on this campus have made scholarships a community effort, we once again had some monumental moments. The students of this University again competed successfully with the Harvards, Yales, Dukes, Stanfords. "

Highlights from this year's success include two Barry Goldwater Scholarships, worth $7,500 each per year; one James Madison Scholarship, worth $24,000; one Fulbright Program Scholarship recipient, worth $25,000 to study abroad in the upcoming year; one Marshall Scholarship recipient, worth $27,000 per year; four National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowships, worth $18,000 each per year; one Harry S. Truman Scholarship, worth $3,000 for the senior year and $27,000 for two or three years of graduate study; the first University of Arkansas USA Today All-College Academic First Team selection; and a USA Today All-College Academic Team Honorable Mention.

Many other students won a variety of other grants and scholarships, including 36 SILO Undergraduate Research Fellowships, worth $2,900 each, from the state of Arkansas.
