UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS TO CELEBRATE LIFE OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The University of Arkansas will begin a weeklong celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther, Jr., on Monday, Jan. 19.

Martin Luther King Week will begin on campus with a march at 11:15 a.m., Jan. 19. The march will originate from the Walton Arts Center parking lot, located at the corner of Dickson and West Streets, and conclude on the UA campus at the Fulbright Peace Fountain. Following the march, a noon vigil will take place at the fountain.

At 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 20, the university will host a lecture by Dr. Ozell Sutton. The lecture will take place in the UA Alltel Ballroom, located on the fifth floor of the UA Student Union, and is free to the public. Parking is available in the UA parking deck, accessible from Stadium Drive, and in Lot 44, located at the corner of Maple Street and Razorback Road. A reception will follow Dr. Sutton’s address in the UA Multicultural Center on the fourth floor of the Student Union.

A dynamic speaker, Dr. Sutton is nationally recognized for his leadership in human relations and conflict resolution and for his extensive work in the civil rights movement. Born in Gould, Ark., Dr. Sutton grew up in Little Rock, where he graduated from Dunbar High School. He served as an escort with the Little Rock Nine when they entered Central High School in 1957. He marched with Dr. King in Washington, D.C. in 1963 and in Selma, Ala. in 1965. He was in Memphis when King was killed in 1968.

From 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 21, a collection of filmed speeches delivered by Dr. King will be shown in the UA Union Movie Theatre, on the fourth floor of the Student Union. This event is free and open to the public.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 22, a read-in of Dr. King’s works will take place in the Arkansas Union Connections Lounge, Pomfret Hall, Walton College, UA Law School, Old Main and Silas Hunt Hall. Participants will be given an opportunity to read works by Dr. King. Copies of Dr. King’s literary works will be available at the site, or participants can bring a copy from which to read. The public is welcome.

The weeklong celebration will conclude with a second showing of the collection of filmed speeches by Dr. King from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 23 in the UA Union Movie Theatre. It is free and open to the public.
