University of Arkansas to Participate In Constitution Day 2005
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The University of Arkansas will join organizations from across the country in the first official celebration of Constitution Day at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, in Giffels Auditorium located in Old Main. The media and public are invited to attend.
Constitution Day Inc. and its founder, Louise Leigh, have celebrated Constitution Day for the past eight years. On Dec. 8, 2004, President George W. Bush signed a bill which designates every Sept. 17 as Constitution Day.
Scheduled presentations and panel discussions include:
. Steve Sheppard, associate professor of law — “The Constitution and War.”
. Don Kelley, director, Fulbright Institute of International Relations — Constitutional struggles between the executive and congressional branches over foreign policy and war powers.
. Todd Shields, professor and chair, department of political science — “Controversial provisions included in the Patriot Act and the potential Constitutional issues raised by this legislation.
Panelists will be available for questions and answers following their presentations. Pocket-sized copies of the United States Constitution will be available for purchase at the event.
