UPWARD BOUND TO WORK WITH HISPANIC YOUTH

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Fifty Latino youth from Rogers and Springdale will begin preparation for college under the auspices of Realizing Educational Aspirations for Latinos (REAL), an Upward Bound program in the Department of Pre-College Programs at the University of Arkansas.

Members of the first REAL Upward Bound class, selected from a total of 115 applicants, will begin the program Saturday, Jan. 31, at the University of Arkansas Student Union (Rooms 508-511). Students and their parents will participate in orientation activities that include a tour of the university campus, lunch and a cultural presentation by the Multicultural Club of the Office of International Students and Scholars. The curriculum for the spring semester offers courses and activities in journalism, public speaking, business, English and cultural awareness.

A six-week summer residential component challenges students with rigorous academic courses in mathematics, English, science, social studies and foreign language. Students participate in social and cultural activities, career exploration workshops, mentoring and tutoring.

REAL Upward Bound students who complete high school also participate in the summer Bridge program. The program provides workshops in time management, as well as research and techniques helping to "bridge the gap" between high school and college life. These students will have the opportunity to take two college-level courses as they transition into higher education.
