FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Noted author and journalist Barbara Nimri Aziz will speak on “Can We Bomb Knowledge? The Case of Iraq” at 3:30 p.m. Monday, March 29, in Giffels Auditorium, Old Main. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Aziz is the author, most recently, of Swimming Up the Tigris: Real Life Encounters with Iraq. She completed her doctorate in social anthropology at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. Her first 15 years of research focused on India, Tibet and Nepal, resulting in three books and numerous scholarly articles.

In 1989 Aziz took up new work. Concentrating on Iraq and the Palestinian lands, she now chose to publish and broadcast as a journalist. Her writing has appeared in national and international newspapers, magazines and anthologies.

In 1992 Aziz founded the Radius of Arab American Writers Inc. and was its director until 2005. She works as an independent scholar, writer and broadcaster. She hosts a weekly radio program on Pacific-WBAI Radio NYC and www.RadioTahrir.org.

Aziz’ awards include visiting professorships and research grants from the American Philosophical Society, Wenner Gren Foundation, National Geographic, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Science Foundatin, and most recently, a Fulbright Scholar award.

Swimming Up The Tigris: Real Life Encounters with Iraq is her fourth book.
