Hartman Hotz Speaker to Examine the Return of Merchant Capitalism

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – A nationally recognized expert on U.S. labor history, Nelson Lichtenstein, will present “The Return of Merchant Capitalism” at 7 p.m. Monday, April 12, in Giffels Auditorium in Old Main. The talk is free and open to the public.

Lichtenstein is the author of The Retail Revolution: How Wal-Mart Created a Brave New World of Business, which was praised widely by such publications as The New York Times Book Review, the Los Angeles Times, The Big Money, and Kirkus Reviews. Lichtenstein also is the editor of the essay collections Wal-Mart: The Face of Twentieth-Century-Capitalism and American Capitalism: Social Thought and Political Economy in the Twentieth Century. He is the sole author of three other scholarly books.

Lichtenstein is a professor of history at the University of California, Santa Barbara and the director of the Center for the Study of Work, Labor and Democracy. He is a fellow of the Society of American Historians and a recipient of the Phillip Taft Prize for the best book in labor history. He received his doctoral degree from the University of California, Berkeley.
