College of Engineering Announces 2010 Student Awards

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The College of Engineering presented student awards for academic achievement at the Student Awards Reception on Thursday, April 29, in the Imhoff Lounge of the Bell Engineering Building.

Dean Ashok Saxena said, “I am grateful to have the opportunity to recognize the outstanding achievements of this distinguished group of students and express my pride in each of them.”

The 2010 College of Engineering Outstanding Senior award was presented to Brittany Bogle. Brittany is a senior in the Department of Industrial Engineering and has maintained a 4.0 GPA as an undergraduate student while also pursuing a minor in Mathematics. She is the recipient of a very distinguished National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Student Fellowship and upon graduation will pursue a PhD in Industrial Engineering at Northwestern University.

The 2010 Outstanding Seniors received awards presented by a faculty representative from their respective departments. The 2010 Outstanding Seniors are:

• Erika Ellis – Biological and Agriculture Engineering
• Cameron Colebank – Civil Engineering
• Colin Paul – Chemical Engineering
• Pooja Chakraborty – Computer Engineering
• Adam Higgins - Computer Science
• Scott Geurin – Electrical Engineering
• Brittany Bogle – Industrial Engineering
• Adam Barito – Mechanical Engineering

The 2010 Presidential Scholar award was presented to Brady Hurlburt. Each year the university recognizes one student in each undergraduate school and college, and one law student on the Fayetteville campus as Presidential Scholars. This program was established in recognition of James E. Martin as President of the University of Arkansas. Each Presidential Scholar is recognized among upper-class students on the basis of grade-point average and receives an award of $1,000. Brady is from Nixa, Mo., and is a student in the department of electrical engineering.

The First Ranked Senior Scholars from each department were also recognized. The 2010 First Ranked Senior Scholars in the College of Engineering are:

• Pooja Chakraborty – Computer Engineering
• Adam Tyler Higgins – Computer Science
• Joel David Vincent – Chemical Engineering
• Erika Marie Ellis – Biological and Agriculture Engineering
• Rachel Mary Lee – Chemical Engineering
• Troy Campbell Long – Industrial Engineering
• Adam Barito – Mechanical Engineering
• Scott Geurin – Electrical Engineering
• Helen Wick – Biological and Agriculture Engineering

Four students in the class of 2010 received the Senior Scholar award which signifies a 4.0 grade point average with some credit hours from other colleges.

• Luke Maschmeyer – Biological and Agriculture Engineering
• Colin Paul – Chemical Engineering

The George and Marion Branigan Scholarship was also presented at the ceremony. The Branigan scholarship was established by former Engineering Dean, George Branigan, and his wife, Marion, and is awarded to the student who has received the highest grade point average and completed the first 90 semester hours of credit at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. The 2010 Branigan Scholar is Jason Major who is a student in the department of electrical engineering.

The Porter Stone Co-op Award is awarded to those engineering students who have exhibited outstanding performance and completed three rotations in the co-op program. George Winter, who coordinates co-op opportunities for the College of Engineering, introduced the 2010 Porter Stone Co-op Award recipients.
