Jeff B. Murray, professor in the Sam M. Walton College of Business department of marketing and logistics, has been invited to present his work at Consumption Theory: A Canon of Classics at the University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Aug. 9-15. The Canon of Classics is a one-week doctoral seminar held in Denmark each year. For each seminar, six scholars are invited from around the world to present on a particular topic.

The seminar is designed to explore some of the key classics that constitute the foundation for many of the current perspectives in consumer research. Theorists covered this summer include Jean Baudrillard, Pierre Bourdieu, Mary Douglas, Michel Foucault, Jurgen Habermas, Claude Levi-Strauss and Marshall Sahlins. Murray will deliver two lectures, the first is entitled "Habermas* and the Critical Theory Legacy" and the second is "Critical Theory in Consumer Research."

The learning goals of the seminar include, first, to provide a basic grounding for doctoral students in some of the key theorists and ideas related to consumer culture. The second goal is to demonstrate the relevance of classical theory for the specific empirical projects and contexts chosen for dissertation topics by the participants.

Doctoral students participating in this year's seminar represent 26 universities and 11 countries from around the world, including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Sweden, The Netherlands, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Murray teaches shopper, buyer and consumer behavior; managing ideas, products and services; and interpretive consumer research. His research interests include consumer culture theory, interpretive consumer research, and fashion and the body. His research has appeared in the Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing Management, Journal of Macromarketing, Journal of Consumer Policy, American Behavioral Scientist, and Consumption, Markets and Culture.
