University Joins State Agencies to Help Arkansas Industry Save Energy

The University of Arkansas, the Arkansas Energy Office and Arkansas Manufacturing Solutions are using $773,000 in federal stimulus funds to create the Arkansas Industrial Energy Clearinghouse. The new organization will provide free assistance and simple training to help Arkansas manufacturers reduce utility costs and save energy.

The Clearinghouse is based at the University of Arkansas and will provide expert advice on basic energy management questions, starting an energy management program, performing energy self-assessments, industrial energy systems, energy and cost savings opportunities, technical resources such as papers and publications, software to help identify and assess energy conservation opportunities and financial incentives for energy conservation.

"The Clearinghouse should lead to significant energy savings and greenhouse gas reductions for industries of all sizes," said Darin Nutter, Clearinghouse director and associate professor of mechanical engineering. "It should also increase the competitive advantage of the manufacturing base in Arkansas."

"I encourage all Arkansas manufacturers to take advantage of this free, innovative program," said Maria Haley, executive director of the Arkansas Economic Development Commission. "As manufacturers save money through reduced energy costs, more money is available for expansions and existing infrastructure. Both Arkansas's economy and environment will benefit through this program."

Arkansas manufacturers can contact the Clearinghouse staff to discuss any energy management needs at 479-575-4609 or ArkansasIEC@uark.edu. The Clearinghouse website features the latest industrial energy-related news, resources and technical support.
