Professor to Talk About Merit Pay for Teachers

Julian Betts, professor and chair of the department of economics at the University of California, San Diego, will speak at noon Friday, Sept. 17, at the University of Arkansas about "Teacher Merit Pay Based on Student Test Scores: A Brilliant Innovation or Near Certain Disaster?"
The lecture is part of the series sponsored by the department of education reform and is free and open to the public. It begins at noon in room 343 of the Graduate Education Building on the Fayetteville campus. A light lunch will be served. RSVP online.
Much of Betts' research has focused on the economic analysis of education. He has written extensively on the link between student outcomes and measures of public school spending including class size, teachers' salaries, and teachers' level of education.
