Mike Johnson Joins Civil Engineering Faculty

The College of Engineering welcomes new faculty member Michael Johnson this semester. Johnson, who has served as associate vice chancellor of facilities management since 2004, will also join the department of civil engineering.

He has also had an extensive career in the U.S. military, retiring as rear admiral in the Civil Engineer Corps in January 2004, after 33 years of service. In February 2010, Johnson was elected to the National Academy of Engineering, one of the highest professional honors accorded an engineer. His academic credentials include a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Colorado in 1970, a bachelor's degree in business/economics from Chapman College in 1975 and masters’ degrees in public works and civil engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1978.

“The department of civil engineering is so fortunate to be able to bring Mike Johnson on board as a faculty member,” said Kevin Hall, department head. “Mike is one of the preeminent engineers in the United States. He brings a level of knowledge and experience to our program which is typically unattainable for faculty members who have followed a ‘normal’ academic path. Our students and faculty will gain a distinct advantage from interactions with Mike.”
