“Monuments,” an exhibition that showcases the works of Fay Jones School of Architecture students, opens Feb. 17 at the University of Arkansas Student Gallery (sUgAR) in downtown Bentonville.

This exhibition will be on display Feb. 17-27, with gallery hours from 2-6 p.m. Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and from 1-5 p.m. Sundays. A reception celebrating the exhibiting artists will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Feb. 18 at the gallery, 114 W. Central Ave., in Bentonville. The reception is free and open to the public.

The “Monuments” exhibition contains student works that demand space for the burial of more than 10,000 persons on a small, urban site in the heart of Chicago. The design requirements at the foreground connote the need for a tall building — a truly American typology — to fuse with the notions of a mausoleum and columbarium. Where those deceased typically find their resting places beneath or slightly above ground, they now occupy the skyline of a great American cityscape.

The exhibited proposals originate from the Design IV students during the spring 2010 semester (then second-year students in a five-year architecture program) and are selections from three disparate strategic trajectories. The selections encompass a variety of media ranging from drawings to digital design.

“Monuments” features of the works of architecture students Ken Hiley, Lucky McMahon, Patrick Templeton, Evans Jones, Brady Duncan, Joey Weishaar and Bradley Hammond.
