Alumnus to Give Chemistry Seminar on Drug Discovery

The department of chemistry and biochemistry Spring Lecture Series welcomes alumnus Ruifeng Liu, of the department of life and health sciences at the University of North Texas, who will present “Drug Discovery: Interplay between Theory and Experiment and Development,” Monday, Feb. 28, at 3:30 p.m. in CHEM 144.

He received his doctorate in 1992 under the direction of Distinguished Professor Peter Pulay. Liu was a postdoc at the University of Georgia at Athens and Emory University, before joining the faculty at East Tennessee State University. In 2001, he joined AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals Company in Wilmington Del., as a senior scientist in CNS drug discovery. In 2010, he joined the faculty of the University of North Texas at Dallas where he is currently an associate professor and interim chair.

Abstract: With rapid advances in computing technology, computational chemistry is becoming increasingly important and indispensable in many fields of chemical research. In this presentation, research examples will be given to illustrate how theoretical computation and experimental studies complement each other. The combination of the two is a powerful approach for advancing our understanding of molecular structures and properties and for accelerating modern drug discovery.

A reception will take place after the seminar in CHEM 105.
