University Websites Being Restored After Power Failure

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas successfully restored power Saturday afternoon and connectivity to the servers that host the university’s Web pages and e-mail services following a major power failure.

The power failure, which originated at approximately 5 p.m. Friday in an underground power cable conduit on campus, shut down electrical support to the university's data center and nearby facilities.

The failure triggered a series of electrical and mechanical failures involving primary and secondary sources of electricity. With only limited electrical power, the university could not operate the servers which support the university’s Web presence and certain e-mail services. The system that stores data never lost power and was shut down appropriately as a precaution to protect and secure data.

University employees worked throughout Friday night and Saturday to restore power. Network connectivity has been restored and employees continue to work to restart the university servers.

The problems affected the ability of Arkansas Newswire to be sent to all university personnel on Monday morning. Some members of the campus community will receive Newswire twice.
