Journalism Student Earns State Department Language Scholarship
Saba Naseem, a junior journalism major, has been awarded a U.S. State Department Critical Language Scholarship to study Arabic in Morocco this summer. She will take part in a nine week intensive language institutes.
Naseem is one of about 575 U.S. undergraduate and graduate students who received a scholarship, among more than 5,200 students who applied. The language program provides fully-funded, group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences. The language program participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship and apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers.
The U.S. State Department launched the Critical Language Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes in 2006 to increase opportunities for American students to study critical-need languages overseas. The program is part of a wider U.S. government effort to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical languages.
