Lazas Takes Gold in Men’s Decathlon; Heymsfield Wins Silver in Women’s Steeplechase

Kevin Lazas, a member of the University of Arkansas men’s track and field team, won the gold medal in the decathlon Saturday, July 23, at the 2011 Pan American Junior Championships in Miramar, Fla.

Grace Heymsfield, a member of the University of Arkansas women’s track and field team, ran to a silver medal in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Lazas, who will be a sophomore on the Razorback men’s team, won three events Saturday to give him a total of 7,979 points over the two-day competition. His future teammate, Gunnar Nixon, finished second in the decathlon with 7,669 points.

Heymsfield, the Razorback distance runner from Elkins, posted a time of  10:47.01, earning her second runner-up finish during the summer season. In her first season running the steeplechase event,  Heymsfield qualified for the Pan Am Junior event with her silver performance at the USA Junior Championships in June, where she posted a personal-best time of 10:40.31.
