Take Precautions During Extreme Heat Conditions

Temperatures in Northwest Arkansas are forecast to be over 100 degrees all week. Members of the University of Arkansas community are reminded there are several simple, common sense things they can do to protect their health during the extreme heat.

First, be sure to drink plenty of fluids, primarily water or sports drinks. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, both can cause dehydration. Sweating is the body’s way of maintaining a normal body temperature so keep the fluids flowing.

Wear loose fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing, which help sweat to evaporate.

Seeking a cool place, indoors, obviously helps prevent heat exhaustion.

If you are outside for an extended period of time, seek shade, avoid sunburn and take breaks to replenish your fluids.

Avoid hot spots such as a parked car, and never leave children or pets alone inside a parked car.

For more information on living with extreme heat, consult the Centers for Disease website:http://www.bt.cdc.gov/disasters/extremeheat/.
