Students Prepare to Enjoy University’s First Fall Break

University of Arkansas students will have a two-day fall break on Monday, Oct. 17, and Tuesday, Oct. 18. This will be the first time that students have gotten time off from classes between Labor Day and Thanksgiving during the fall semester, and it is expected to become a permanent part of the academic calendar.

The idea of the break is to give students a chance to rest and recharge before heading into the final weeks of the semester.

Students have asked for a fall break for several years, and the Associated Student Government has taken the idea to the administration and the Faculty Senate many times. At the request of the faculty the ASG polled students in 2010 to find out if they actually did want a break during the fall semester. The answer was a resounding “yes.”

With support from the provost’s office and the Faculty Senate the request was sent to the university calendar committee. The break was then scheduled for the fall 2011 semester.

University offices will remain open, as they do during spring break, and university staff will be at work both days.
