Art Student Chosen for National Ceramic Arts Exhibition
"High Class Cup Display" by Kelly Brenner
Kelly Brenner, a recent graduate of the University of Arkansas, has been selected to take part in the 46th Annual Conference for the National Council on Education for Ceramic Arts. Brenner’s “High Class Cup Display” is among a total of 40 ceramic works selected for the National Student Juried Exhibition; 593 works were offered for consideration. Brenner received her Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in art from the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences in 2010.
In regard to her ceramic display, Brenner said, “I slip cast the red Solo cup, an inexpensive plastic product, to explore themes of value, durability and functionality.” Her “High Class Cup Display” consists of 55 porcelain Solo cups carefully crafted and stacked to form a pyramid. “Creating a mold of the disposable Solo cup and casting it in porcelain opposes its popular characteristics,” Brenner admitted, “elevating its value, but also infusing it with irony.”
The national conference will be held in Seattle, Wash., March 28-31. For the exhibition, jurors will present the top students with cash, gift certificates and awards for artistic excellence. The National Council on Education for Ceramic Arts is an organization that promotes global education and appreciation for the ceramic arts through education, research and community programs.
Brenner, a native of Marion, is interested in pursuing a master’s degree in ceramic arts.
