University Recreation Spring 2012 Non-Credit Instruction Schedule Announced

Modern and Jazz Dance, Adult Fitness Swimming, and American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification are just a few of the not-for-credit classes offered by University Recreation during the Spring 2012 semester. 

“University Recreation provides opportunities to learn wellness and activity skills that can be used throughout the lifetime”, said Jeremy Battjes, director of University Recreation. “Taking a class is a great way to become socially engaged, as well as enhance physical, cognitive and emotional health.” 

Modern and Jazz Dance is a new and exciting dance class format offered this semester. Ballroom Dance and Swing Dance will also be offered. Multiple dance classes reflect recent and renewed interest in dance forms, as well as offer multicultural experiences for participants. 

“We are thrilled to offer multiple styles of dance. And one of the best aspects about the dance classes is you don’t need to have a partner,” said Sam Fehr, graduate assistant for instructional programs and special events. “These classes are for everyone, not just those who plan to register as a pair.”

For a more unique dance experience, try Capoeria in the University Recreation Fitness Center in the Arkansas Union. Capoeria is a Brazilian art form that combines martial arts, music and dance for a unique and powerful workout, and will be featured on the Spring 2012 Group Exercise schedule. 

Aquatics program offerings include Adult Fitness Swimming, which fine-tunes competitive swimming strokes for fitness training, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from Feb. 14 through April 12 at 5:30 p.m. Adult and Youth swim lessons are also available to help introduce aquatic skills to inexperienced swimmers on Mondays and Wednesday evenings. Sessions for adult and youth swim lessons are Feb. 13 to March 14, and March 26 to April 25. 

Finally, University Recreation is proud to continue its role as an American Red Cross authorized provider for CPR, First Aid, and AED certification classes, as well as Lifeguard Certification classes. These classes enhance the well-being of the entire campus and community by increasing the number of trained emergency responders.

CPR/First Aid/AED and Lifeguard Certification are open to registration by the general public, and do not require guest pass procedures. All other classes are open to registration by students and HPER members only. Non-members may register with current HPER members by following guest pass procedures.
