Soil Science Society of America Names Sharpley Editor-in-Chief

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Soil Science Society of America board of directors has appointed Andrew Sharpley, University of Arkansas professor of soils and water quality, editor-in-chief of the society.

Sharpley conducts research on the cycling of phosphorus in soil-plant-water systems in relation to agricultural production systems and water quality, including the management of animal manures, fertilizers and crop residues. He is a member of the crop, soil and environmental sciences department in Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences on the Fayetteville campus and the U of A System Division of Agriculture.

As editor-in-chief, he will be a member of the editorial boards for the Soil Science Society of America Journal, the Vadose Zone Journal, Journal of Environmental Quality and Soil Survey Horizons. He also is a member of the books and multimedia committee; will chair the S301 editorial affairs, policies and practices committee; and is a member of the editorial policy coordination committee for the Tri-Societies, which include the Soil Science Society of America, American Society of Agronomy and Crop Science Society of America.

Sharpley is co-director of the Arkansas Discovery Farm Program. The stakeholder-driven demonstration, verification and research program documents the water quality and quantity benefits of conservation practices on working farms, evaluates alternative practices to reduce off-farm impacts and provides outreach to the wider watershed community.
