Rev Up Your New Year With University Recreation Small Group Training

Small group training is one of the most popular and effective fitness trends that combines the camaraderie of group exercise classes with the personal attention and specific focus of personal training. University Recreation is excited to offer several different small group classes during the spring 2012 semester that focus on a specialized format, individual progression, and skill development.

“Small group training allows instructors to build relationships with each participant and facilitate individual progression, similar to personal training, but at a fraction of the cost,” said Jessica Graham, graduate assistant for fitness programs at UREC.  “We have some new equipment at the UREC Fitness Center in the Arkansas Union that lets us explore some class types that we haven’t offered before. We are also offering several sections of Boot Camp, which has been popular lately.” 

Small group training sections meet biweekly for four or five weeks and build upon previous progression to further participants’ fitness and skill levels. Each section has limited roster space.  Participants must be HPER members, and can register in the UREC membership office in HPER 225 or in the University Recreation Fitness Center in the Arkansas Union. 

The Small Group Training offerings for Spring 2012 are as follows:

Zero Gravity Training: Use the Total Gym apparatus to receive a full-body workout that utilizes your body weight for resistance.  Each session is four weeks and limited to six participants.

  • Section 1: March 26 – April 18; Monday/Wednesday 3 – 4 p.m.
    Location: UREC Fitness Center in the Arkansas Union.
    Cost: $30 per section. 

Advanced Team Training: For the more advanced exerciser, this class includes circuits, agility drills, and functional strength that may remind you of sports team workouts.  Each session is 4 weeks and limited to 10 participants.

  • Section 1:  March 27 – April 19; Tuesday/Thursday 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
    Location:  UREC Fitness Center in the Arkansas Union.
    Cost:  $30 per section. 

Let’s Get it Started Boot Camp: Jumpstart your commitment to fitness and healthy eating habits with strength and cardiovascular drills, as well as basic fitness and nutritional assessments.  Each session is five weeks and limited to 15 participants.

  • Union Section 1: March 27 – April 26; Tuesday/Thursday 6:30 – 7:30 a.m.
    Location: UREC Fitness Center in the Arkansas Union
    Cost: $50 per section.
  • HPER Section 1: Feb. 13 – March 14; Monday/Wednesday 4:45 – 5:45 p.m.
    Location: HPER Building.
    Cost: $50 per section.

Fitness U:  For the beginning exerciser who is interested in becoming more familiar with the equipment available in the HPER Building or in the UREC Fitness Center in the Arkansas Union. Topics include basic exercise principles, Donna Axum/UREC Fitness Center orientations, and introductions to strength and cardiovascular training. Participants must have membership at the designated location.  Each section meets once per week for four weeks.

  • HPER Section 1:  Feb. 7 – Feb. 28; Tuesdays 5:30 – 7 p.m.
    Location: HPER Building.
    Cost: $20 per section.
  • UREC Section 1:  Feb. 22 – March 14; Wednesdays 5:30 – 7 p.m.
    Location: UREC Fitness Center in the Arkansas Union.
    Cost: $20 per section.

Current HPER members will be able to access the University Recreation Fitness Center in the Arkansas Union for no additional charge through July 30, 2012.
