Professor Honored at Supply Chain Management Educator's Conference

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. –David Hyatt, a clinical assistant professor of supply chain management at the University of Arkansas, earned the E. Grosvenor Plowman Award for best paper at the 2011 Supply Chain Management Educator’s Conference in Philadelphia.

His article, titled Proactive Environmental Strategies in the Supply Chain, explores whether firms might improve their performance with respect to the natural environment by collaborating with organizations outside their industry, such as environmental non-governmental organizations.

“We find that environmental non-governmental organizations are attentive to environmental problems and restructure their organizations to enable partnerships with business to solve those problems,” Hyatt said. “This study suggests that firms may consider environmental organizations and other stakeholder groups as suppliers of technical expertise and legitimacy.”

The Supply Chain Management Educator’s Conference is the premier conference in the small but growing supply chain management field. It gives academics and professionals a chance to network with colleagues from around the globe and learn about the latest research and development in the field.

As winner of the Plowman Award, Hyatt presented his research in a conference plenary.

“Being a new faculty member, I was deeply appreciative just to have my paper accepted,” Hyatt said. “But to win the best paper was beyond my dreams. And the best part was the opportunity to highlight the new department of supply chain in the Walton College of Business.”

Hyatt’s paper was one of 34 candidates for the Plowman Award.
