On Feb. 15, the American Library Association’s electronic newsletter American Libraries Focus featured the “Women of a New Tribe” photography exhibit by Jerry Taliaferro currently on display in the lobby area of Mullins Library. The exhibit, which includes photographs of women in from the local community, honors the physical and spiritual beauty of black women.

Taliaferro presents his subjects in the dramatic, high-glamour style reminiscent of the photography of 1930s and 1940s Hollywood. The photographs explore different themes, such as tribal beauty, portraiture and family relationships.

This is the fourth time in the past five years that the University Libraries has been featured in American Libraries. The Libraries were named “Digital Library of the Week” for three collections, including “Senator J.W. Fulbright Speaks” from American Libraries Direct, Nov. 25, 2009, “Commonwealth College Fortnightly” from American Libraries Direct, July 7, 2010, and “Politics and Principles: Documenting the Career of Congressmen Brooks Hays” from American Libraries Direct, August 17, 2011.

“Women of a New Tribe” will be on display in Mullins Library through the end of April in honor of both Black History Month and Women’s History Month.
