Journal Citation Reports Database Helps Determine Scholarly Impact

The University Libraries have recently added a subscription to Journal Citation Reports for 2010, with the support of the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences and the Office of the Provost.

Journal Citation Reports allows the evaluation and comparison of journals through citation data drawn from more than 11,000 scholarly journals indexed in the Web of Science modules for science, technology and social science (arts and humanities journals are not included).

Journal Citation Reports analysis reveals the most frequently cited journals in a given field, the highest impact journals in that field (based on what the database calls “impact factors”), and the largest journals in the field. The journal’s “impact factor” is a measure of the frequency with which articles in a specific journal have been cited in a particular year and is one measure used by Journal Citation Reports to help determine a journal’s overall prominence in a field.

Learn more about Journal Citation Reports on the Libraries’ Web site.
