School of Social Work Holds Open House

More than 50 social work students, community social workers, potential social work students, faculty, and staff attended the Fulbright College School of Social Work’s third annual open house on March 7. The open house is held during March to celebrate National Social Work Month.

The event provides outreach and information to potential graduate and undergraduate students. It offers opportunities for current social work students to network with community social workers who are potential employers and future colleagues. Many of the professional social workers that attended are also Field Internship Instructors for the School of Social Work and provide invaluable internship opportunities required of all social work students.

In addition to holding informational sessions with potential social work students, each year exciting new activities are added to the event. This year a scavenger hunt was included to encourage students and potential students to explore the School of Social Work building, meet new people, and collect information about the school and the social work profession. Each participant completing the scavenger hunt was entered in a drawing for a new Kindle. The lucky winner of the Kindle was April Baysinger, an undergraduate social work major. Just for fun, another new event this year was a photo booth. Photos from this activity will be posted on the School of Social Work Facebook page soon.

According to Alisha Ferguson, the event founder, “This [the open house] is just one more way the School of Social Work continuously works to achieve its goals of admitting and preparing the best and brightest new professional social workers and fostering collaborative community relationships.”

The open house would not have been a success without the hard work of school staff, faculty and, especially, the many students who helped plan, implement, and clean up after the event. Persons who worked so hard to make the event fun and informative include Ferguson, Leah Hamilton, Glenda House, Michael Collie, Josh Weatherford, Janette Byrd, and a host of students.
