The department of University Recreation (UREC) developed a challenging incentive program for the university community called Commit to Fit. This program allowed participants to virtually trek their way through the 174-mile Ozark Highlands Trail by logging miles on a treadmill, elliptical, stair stepper, bike, group cycle class, swimming or going on an Outdoor Connection Center trip.

There were 114 participants who logged a collective total of 7,531 miles in a span of six weeks. Twenty-four people who participated in the program completed the total of 174 miles.

Fitness-related prizes, such as water bottles and watches, were awarded when participants reached 50, 100 and 174 miles.

“Having a goal helps keep you on track to improve your fitness,” said UREC member and "Commit to Fit" participant Jon Fricke. “It was a great incentive program!”

UREC will celebrate "National Start Walking Day"on starting at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 10 by leading a walk through campus and the Oak Ridge Trail.

This walk will be led by UREC personal trainers, who will help educate how small bouts of exercise turn into long-term results. The walk will leave from the UREC Fitness Center and will be approximately 1.5 miles long.
