German Graduate Student Receives Fellowship to Study Yiddish in New York
Yvette Ortiz, a master's candidate in German, has been awarded a $6,000 fellowship to study in the Uriel Weinreich Program in Yiddish Language, Literature and Culture of Bard College and the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research.
Ortiz will take part in the program, which is held in New York City, in June and July.
Ortiz’ research mentor, Jennifer Hoyer, said of the award: “This is a tremendously exciting opportunity for Yvette and for the university. It really speaks to the intellectual curiosity and initiative of our students here. There is a growing number of students interested in Jewish Studies; they pursue exciting research opportunities and come back and help instill that interest in others.”
In the coming academic year of 2012-13, a variety of Jewish studies events, ranging from lectures and exhibits to Yiddish films and musical performances, will take place in Northwest Arkansas thanks to the prestigious Legacy Heritage Fund Jewish Studies Project grant, administered by the Association for Jewish Studies, the national academic organization for the study of Jewish culture, history and languages.
