Apparel Studies Major Wins Fashion Career Day Award

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Hillary Newth, an apparel studies major from Overland Park, Kan., won first place in the DAVACO Retail Services merchandising board competition at the annual Fashion Group International of Dallas Career Day April 13 in the World Trade Center in Dallas.
Newth received a $500 scholarship for her first place entry, which was one of 120 in the competition. She was one of 30 University of Arkansas apparel studies students among some 1,038 students and guests from 37 universities and colleges at the event.
Apparel studies is a major in the School of Human Environmental Sciences, which is part of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences.
Newth's merchandising board was the culmination of a multi-faceted project that included researching the Havaianas footwear company and developing a merchandising and brand identity plan for the in-store environment in the student's home market.
Kathy Smith, assistant professor, said the competition was a component of the senior capstone merchandising class in the apparel studies class.
Career Day, hosted by Fashion Group International of Dallas, provides a philanthropic, educational outreach program for students seeking careers in the fashion and lifestyle industries. In addition to student competitions, it provides networking opportunities and speakers and exhibits by leading professionals and companies.
