Doga, Adult Fitness Swimming, Healthy Cooking, and American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED are available as not-for-credit classes through the University Recreation department during summer 2012.

“Summer is a great time to try a new class that you might not ordinarily have time for during the business of the school year,” said Katie Helms, assistant director for University Recreation. “UREC provides recreational and learning opportunities year-round to ensure that the campus community stays active and engaged.”

A particularly innovative program scheduled to debut in June is Doga. Doga is Yoga with dogs, and is designed to provide interaction between dogs and their owners utilizing yoga techniques. Specifically, Doga combines gentle stretching, meditation and massage through partner poses between a dog and owner. Doga will be held on Old Main Lawn on Wednesdays from June 6 to June 27 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. This class is free and no pre-registration is required. Participanting dogs will be required to be on a leash and under control at all times. Waste clean-up is required.

Aquatics program offerings include Adult and Youth swim lessons. Lessons are designed to help introduce aquatic skills to inexperienced swimmers. Lessons include breathing techniques, floating, arm and leg stroke combinations, and basic water safety skills. Classes meet on Monday and Wednesday evenings from June 4 to July 2 (Session 1), and from July 9 to Aug. 8 (Session 2).  Pre-registration is required. For youth lessons, children must be five years of age at the time of registration. Guardians are required to be present in the HPER Natatorium during lessons.  Pre-registration is required, and is limited to UREC members only. Cost is $40 per session.

University Recreation is proud to continue its role as an American Red Cross authorized provider for CPR, First Aid, and AED certification classes. These classes enhance the well-being of the entire campus and community by increasing the number of trained emergency responders. Adult First Aid, CPR, and AED will be held on Thursday, June 14 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required, and the class is open to the public. Cost is $65 for U of A students, $75 for non-students and the general public.

Registration for UREC non-credit programs must be done in person at the UREC membership office in HPER 225. A complete schedule of session dates, class days and times, and session costs can be viewed at http://urec.uark.edu/8326.htm.
