Campus Day 2012, held May 4 at the University of Arkansas, was a huge success! Approximately 1200 students, grades 6-9, from Northwest Arkansas and surrounding regions took part in a series of activities in Bud Walton Arena, campus classrooms, and at the Chi Omega Greek Theatre. Students participated in breakout sessions throughout the day, where they learned about topics like engineering, food science, world languages and landscape architecture. They heard from current students, faculty members and administrators, and they got a taste of college life on the Hill.

Campus Day is a program of Talent Search, housed within the office of diversity affairs, which reaches out to more than 2,100 students across Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri in grades 6-12 to promote the skills and motivation needed to successfully complete a bachelor’s degree. Two-thirds of program participants must be low-income according to federal poverty guidelines, and they must be first-generation college students.

Talent Search is an early-intervention TRIO project funded by the U.S. Department of Education. TRIO began with Upward Bound, which emerged out of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 in response to President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty. In 1965, Talent Search, the second outreach program, was created as part of the Higher Education Act. In 1968, Student Support Services, which was originally known as Special Services for Disadvantaged Students, was authorized by the Higher Education Amendments and became the third in a series of educational opportunity programs. By the late 1960s, the term TRIO was coined to describe these federal programs. Over the years, the TRIO programs have been expanded and now include eight programs. The University of Arkansas is host to the original programs plus Veterans Upward Bound, and Upward Bound Math and Science.
